Repeated freeze–thaw and evaporation cycles gradually push the thin salt crust into hexagonal honeycomb shapes. The surface is pretty hard and when walking on it, feels as if walking on an uneven asphalt road.

The Milky Way

I shot this at about midnight while camping between stovepipe wells and furnace creek. The sky is so clear, you can see the milky way extremely clearly with your naked eyes.

Badwater Basin

The patterns in the salt are salt deposits from freeze-thaw and evaporation cycles.
